Job Description:
Choirmaster-Organist
St. John’s Episcopal Church
Dallas, Texas

St. John’s is a church that combines the awe and inspiration of liturgical
worship with preaching and teaching that engages hearts and minds with the
Gospel of Jesus Christ.

The parish seeks a choirmaster and organist with the skills to grow our adult
choir and facilitate a children’s choir that is being organized with
enthusiastic parental support.

The position requires an average of 20 hours per week, with responsibilities
including the principal Sunday liturgy, a weekly rehearsal for the choir, and
organ leadership for three chapels each week at St. John’s Episcopal
School.

Essential characteristics include a desire for excellence; a broad repertoire
of church music; an appreciation for the Anglican musical tradition; strong
skills in sight reading and improvisation; a willingness to bring a spiritual
focus to the ministry (demonstrating care for the choir members, leading
choristers in prayer at rehearsals, emphasizing the devotional nature of the
music); and a desire to use one’s gifts for the glory of God and the
building up of the larger St. John’s community.

The organ is a three-manual, sixty-rank Aeolian-Skinner acquired in 2003 from
the Manhattan School of Music (formerly Juilliard).

Compensation is commensurate with the candidate’s qualifications,
experience, and the negotiated hours per week.

Interested parties may send a résumé to the Rector, Fr. David Houk, at St.
John’s Episcopal Church, 848 Harter Road, Dallas, Texas  75218, or by

repertoire list, recital programs, and/or service bulletins.
