Job Description: 

Edenton Street United Methodist Church is a community of faith, inviting all

equipped to do extraordinary things.  ESUMC is not simply a number of red
brick buildings on the corner of Edenton and Dawson Streets in downtown
Raleigh, NC! While we have been on this corner for two hundred years we are a
vibrant growing community leaning into the twenty-first century.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
1. Oversee the ministry and direction of all music groups participating in
traditional worship. This includes but is not limited to Chancel Choir, Youth
Choir, Children’s Choirs, Hand Bell Choirs, and Liturgical Dance ensembles.
2. Participate with pastoral leadership and collaborate with other church
musicians to plan inspiring liturgical music and worship arts, with primary
responsibility in the traditional worship services.
3. Lead the yearly program planning and evaluation process in consultation
with staff and constituent groups.
4. Develop and lead a comprehensive, church-wide music and worship arts
education program available to children, youth, and adults. Encourage the
sharing of artistic gifts by the laity of the church.
5. Collaborate with staff and laity to develop and support a variety of
events to engage the community through the arts.
6. Attract, develop and retain volunteer participants for all music and
worship arts programs.
7. Perform administrative tasks required by the position, including the
development and management of the traditional music budget. Advocate for
developing resources for
all music and worship arts.
8. Supervise the Associate Director of Music and delegate tasks as
appropriate to volunteers and other staff.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPECTATIONS
•    Master’s degree in music preferred, with significant experience leading
a large church music program.
•    Knowledge of United Methodist worship tradition and a theological
understanding sufficient to select appropriate music and texts for worship.
•    Broad knowledge of sacred repertoire is essential, as are excellent
conducting skills and keyboard competency sufficient to sight-read hymns and
anthem accompaniments.
•    Must be available to work a flexible full-time schedule including
evenings and weekends.
•    Sundays are required.
