Job Description: 

The Director of Music is called by and works closely with the Dean as
principal musician of the Cathedral, full time, to coordinate the music
program as it relates to worship and community life of the Cathedral.
The Director of Music, as an integral part of the Cathedral staff and
ministry,
•       Is principal musician for all liturgical services, working to build a
broad-based program that reaches persons of all ages and is reflective of the
diversity of the Cathedral community;
•       Serves as Director of Choirs and Organist, and calls, as negotiated with
the Dean and funded by the Vestry, additional assisting part-time staff as
organist, choir director, etc.;
•       Has responsibility for the music at weddings, funerals, and Diocesan
events held at the Cathedral, and is compensated beyond salary for same;
Applications from qualified candidates who are primarily organists or choral
conductors will be considered.
•       Hires other assisting musicians including, but not limited to, substitute
organists and /or conductors, instrumentalists, singers including
professional musicians and visiting performers;
•       Maintains and develops the Cathedral’s music program.
•       Selects suitable repertoire for use at all liturgical services, including
hymns and service music, in consultation with the Dean and groups charged
with assisting the Dean in the oversight of worship;
•       Educates the congregation with regard to church music, congregational
singing, and the place of music in the life and witness of the church.
•       Collaborates with the Dean and worship committees appointed by the Dean,
Music Committee, and program staff to introduce and develop musical
enhancements for worship;
•       Assists the Dean and other clergy in consulting and advising wedding
parties and bereaved families regarding pastorally sensitive and liturgically
appropriate music selection for weddings and funerals;
•       Convenes and is an ex-officio member of the Music Committee;
•       Manages the music budget and works with the Music and Budget Committees
to develop annual budgets and plan for future expenditures and program
expansion.
•       Works with the Dean to develop opportunities in planned giving in
relationship to the Cathedral music program.
•       Oversees the maintenance of the Cathedral’s musical instruments, choir
vestments, music library, and designated music spaces (choir room, music
resource room, gallery, etc.);
•       Maintains administrative records and the music library, and purchases
music and other items necessary to the music program when needed.
•       Acts as liaison with any institution or individual wishing to present a
musical event at the Cathedral.
•       Promotes the Cathedral as a center for diocesan activity and formation, a
site for ecumenical and interfaith dialogue and celebration, and as a House
of Prayer for All People especially in times of transition and crises;
•       Has responsibility for broad functions and procedures on a highly
professional level in both administration and performance.
•       Has a desire to work collaboratively on the Cathedral staff and in the
greater communities of church and city
•       Has a vision for the Cathedral as a resource center and the role it plays
in the life of a diocese, city and region
Qualifications and Experience
Master’s degree or higher, and/or Associate or Fellowship of AGO or
equivalent
Demonstrated experience as Organist/Choirmaster, preferably in an Episcopal
Church
Three or more years of music program leadership
A commitment to Christian faith and life
Skill in the management and pastoral care of people
Ability to lead dynamic and organized choir rehearsals
Organizational and leadership skills in gathering and conducting choirs
Passion for engaging congregations through music
Attention to detail and administrative tasks
Commitment and ability to build a supportive and encouraging environment for
musicians

Salary and Terms Summary
40 hours per week with full medical benefits, pension
Compensation based on AAM/AGO standards
Four weeks of annual vacation
Sabbatical after five years as negotiated
Continuing education time and allowance
Right of first refusal for weddings and funerals for additional fees
Use of facilities for private teaching per safeguarding guidelines
