About Us:  The First Congregational Church of Southington is a caring
community where all are welcome to participate in a vibrant ministry that
focuses on God-centered living.  The church offers a variety of worship
styles that are reflected in music from traditional to contemporary formats.
Currently, three Sunday worship services are held including a chapel service
that uses a piano to support traditional music.  A second traditional service
uses organ, bells, other instruments, and adult and youth choirs to support a
great variety of traditional music.  The third service provides a
contemporary style of worship that includes a band (electric instruments) and
choir to offer contemporary music.

Position Overview:  The Director of Music provides leadership to the overall
music program.  The Director collaborates with the pastors to provide
appropriate music to support the weekly worship services.  As appropriate,
the Director assists and supports the work of the other music staff. The
major responsibility is to provide instrumental music for worship services
and manage the choir(s). In addition, the Director recruits individuals to
participate in the music programs and engages outside community music
organizations as appropriate. The Director of Music is responsible to the
Senior Pastor and the Board of Music and Arts (BOMA).

Essential Functions
1.      Provide music and direct/manage the choirs at the service(s) regularly
scheduled on Sunday mornings. Select appropriate organ, instrumental, and
choral music for each service. Direct the children’s choir at services as
scheduled.
2.      Provide and select instrumental and choral music for the following
additional services during the year: Christmas Eve, Ash Wednesday, and Holy
Week.  Other additional services shall be recompensed.
3.      Have responsibility for the leadership of all choirs, and all other
musical ensembles that shall be needed from time to time. This includes
working in cooperation with and supporting other music staff.
4.      Be responsible for weekly rehearsals with each choir from September until
June. During the summer months, rehearsals shall be limited to forty-five
minutes preceding the Sunday services.
5.      Cooperate with the pastors and BOMA in the area of general planning and
leadership of the church’s music and arts program.
6.      Be responsible for managing the music budget including the purchase of all
music and music supplies, and for the hiring of instrumental and vocal
soloists.
7.      Report to BOMA the condition and needs for the maintenance of instruments
and music technology.
8.      Be responsible for providing music at all weddings, funerals, and memorial
services held in the meetinghouse or chapel. The services of other musicians
may be engaged only after offering right of first refusal to the church’s
music staff.  Rehearsal with instrumentalists, soloists, etc. shall be
recompensed per event.
9.      Be permitted to use the facilities of the church (instruments and rooms)
for private teaching. Times of lessons and use of facilities must be
scheduled in advance through the church office, so as not to conflict with
the needs of the church.
10.     Provide support to the bell choir volunteer director/coordinator.
11.     Engage in outreach to community music organizations as appropriate.

Qualifications: The candidate shall have the skills, experience, and
knowledge of:
•       Broad range of sacred music, from traditional to contemporary;
•       Biblical and ecclesiastical understanding necessary for a church music
director, and is a person of Christian character;
•       Choral/instrumental direction for adults and children;
•       Formal instrumental training (including organ and keyboard);
•       Background in the operation of technology related to performance of
music; and
•       Advanced formal training conforming to the development of the above
required skills as outlined.

Compensation:  Salary will be commensurate with training and experience.
