Job Description:
St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, a large parish in Goochland County, Virginia
seeks a three-quarter time Director of Music who will lead our music program,
maintaining its excellence and building its capacity to enhance the spiritual
growth of the parish in worship and beyond.

The ideal candidate will be an experienced choral conductor with a passion
for teaching musicians of all ages, a strong organist, a detail-oriented
administrator, a kind and caring pastoral presence, an energetic and
innovative builder of programs, and a collegial staff member. Grounded in the
inclusive Episcopal faith, our Director of Music will demonstrate deep love
for and knowledge of our Anglican musical tradition, while appreciating the
best new music being written for the Church.

St. Mary’s, which began as a 19th century mission to local coal miners and
farmers, straddles the suburban western metropolitan area of Richmond and
rural Goochland County. Because of its location and history, St. Mary’s is
uniquely situated to address the needs of both communities and has
experienced significant growth and expansion over the past 25 years. St.
Mary’s is a healthy, program-sized parish with significant potential for
further growth in size and commitment, seeking to nurture its identity as a
friendly and welcoming parish rooted in its community and Christ Jesus our
Lord.

Our music program is grounded in the Anglican choral tradition. We currently
have an Adult Choir, consisting of a mix of volunteer and paid singers, that
rehearses once a week and provides music at our 11am service, as well as
choral Evensongs and other special worship services. We also have a
Children’s Choir that rehearses once a week and sings approximately once a
month. St. Mary’s has a two-manual, thirty-rank organ built by the Schantz
Company and two Steinway baby grand pianos.
