Director of Music/Choir Director

Santa Teresa Hills Presbyterian Church is seeking a Director of Music/Choir
Director for Sunday worship, to begin in August or September, 2017.

several years experience conducting school, church, or community choruses.
All individuals possessing a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Music, who are
pursuing a Master’s degree in Music, or who have conducting experience are
encouraged to apply.

Music Program Description

Santa Teresa Hills Presbyterian Church follows the reformed Protestant
tradition, and worships in a traditional format with some contemporary
elements (blended service).  There is an established Choir of 15+
individuals.  Most have many years of experience and read music.  The music
style tends toward traditional anthems, though we regularly include
contemporary and/or praise music (hymns or choral pieces) and actively seek
out and perform from a broad genre including gospel, jazz, praise, Taize,
African, Latin, plus older styles (baroque, madrigal, selections from the
‘great composers’).

The Church’s interests and budget support regular purchase of new music.
The typical accompaniment is piano or organ, with occasional use of other
instruments that are available from volunteers and sometimes paid
professionals.

Duties

1.      Works with the Pastor, the Worship and Music Ministry and the Accompanist
to propose and plan music (anthems, introits, extroits, responses, solos) to
be performed by the Choir during Sunday worship and other Special Services as
needed.  Currently there is one worship service held Sunday at 10 a.m.,
following a traditional/blended format. Special services include Christmas
Eve and Easter Holy Week.  In addition, the Director may propose and plan
occasional Choir/Music concerts.
2.      Rehearses the Choir each week during Thursday night rehearsals (currently
7:30 – 9 p.m.).  Schedule and conduct additional rehearsal time as needed
for the Choir, soloists, and accompanist.
3.      Proposes purchase of new music.  Works with the Worship and Music Ministry
Elder to develop annual budgets.
4.      During summer worship (no choir):  Duties may include scheduling and
rehearsing special music (solos, small groups, instrumentalists), and helping
prepare for the “open” hymn singing portion of the service.
5.      Oversees the children choir when one is organized.

Remuneration

1.      On weeks when the Choir (or some soloist or ensemble that needs
rehearsing) is singing: $200 per week.
2.      All other services:  $100 per week
3.      Special services: $50 per event
4.      Summer worship:  $100 per week (unless special rehearsal is required for
soloists and small ensembles and then it will be $200).
5.      Vacation: One week for each quarter employed. Maximum of four weeks per
year. Vacation needs to be requested at least two weeks in advance.
6.      There are no sick days or health benefits for this position.
