Betts is the author of nine volumes of fiction, most recently The Sharp Teeth of Love (AA Knopf), just optioned for a motion picture. She was a faculty member of the University of North Carolina English Department, Chapel Hill, for 33 years, serving as chair of the creative writing program, and elected chair of the UNC faculty, among other distinctions. A tenured and chaired professor, upon her retirement the Doris Betts Chaired Professorship in Creative Writing was established. She has received a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Medal of Merit in the Short Story from the Academy of Arts and Letters, three Sir Walter Raleight Awards, the N.C. Medal in Literature, and other prizes in fiction and teaching. She lives with her husband on a horse farm near Pittsboro, N.C., continues to publish stories in literary magazines, and is at work on two novels.
