We are seeking to hire a Music Director who will have the responsibility of
the overall music program of The Church of the Good Shepherd, United Church
of Christ, Ann Arbor, MI.

Position Description and Time Commitment
Salaried position
Annual Commitment:  Start end of August, end 2nd Sunday in June
Schedule:  9 hours weekly; 42 weeks annual (includes 2 weeks off)
-       Time for choir rehearsal planning and preparation.
-       Weekly worship planning collaboration with Pastor.
-       Thursday evening Good Shepherd Choir rehearsal 7:00-8:00 p.m.
-       Thursday evening time requirement (inclusive of rehearsal): 6:30-8:30 p.m.
-       Sunday Service:  10:15 – 11:45 a.m.
-       Sunday morning time requirement:  9:30-12:00 noon (inclusive of worship
service).
-       4th Sunday of each month off.

Responsibilities
The Music Director has the overall responsibility for the music program of
Church of the Good Shepherd, while giving support to the pastor, volunteer
musicians and the congregation.  KEYBOARD SKILLS STRONGLY PREFERRED.
Music Program
A.      Plan for and coordinate the music for worship services including hymn
selection, choral anthems and/or other special music.
B.      Direct and accompany the Good Shepherd Choir: train and motivate a choir
whose members have a variety of musical backgrounds and ability; enlist new
members.
C.      Plan for and lead weekly choir rehearsals as outline above.
D.      Oversee the music budget.
E.      Order choral music in accordance with the music budget.
F.      Organize and maintain choral music library.
G.      Introduce new music/hymns to the congregation during worship services when
requested.
H.      Coordinate our team of volunteer musicians (worship pianists,
instrumentalists, soloists).
I.      Arrange for regular piano tuning/maintenance with a qualified
professional.

Pastor and Worship Commission
A.       Plan music for worship with the Pastor weekly.
B.       Choose anthems and hymns to coordinate with Pastor’s scripture,
sermons, and other worship themes.
C.      Participate in planning worship services, including special worship
services:  Martin Luther King, Jr. Sunday, Lent and Easter, Advent and
Christmas.
D.      Participate in planning music for funerals, memorial services and weddings
as available.
E.      Attend quarterly Worship Committee meetings.

Qualifications
A.      Bachelor’s level training or equivalent, experience in such areas as
choral accompaniment, hymnody, vocal dynamics, choral techniques and
conducting, music selection.
B.      Proficient piano and keyboard skills to accompany the choir.
C.      Knowledge of the church year and music appropriate to it.
D.      Vocal and musical leadership.
E.      Ability to coordinate and support volunteer musicians.
F.      Sensitive to the importance of music in worship.
G.      Value and support the Church of the Good Shepherd’s mission and worship
style.
H.      Ability to incorporate and introduce a wide variety of musical genres
(contemporary, spirituals, classical, gospel, etc.).  This would include
using a variety of new and old hymns for congregational singing, as well as
choral music selections that reflect our diversity and commitment to being
multiracial and multicultural, open and affirming, and a peace and justice
congregation.
