Portsmouth Catholic, the two historic churches of Holy Redeemer and St
Mary’s in Portsmouth Ohio, is seeking a new Music Director.
The music repertoire consists of a mix of the Great Western Hymn
Canon, Ordinary settings for voice and organ, choral music either A Capella
or with organ accompaniment, some latin chant, and Psallite and Kelly (St
Meinrad) settings of the Psalms, entrance and communion chants. Both churches
have west end choir lofts, well maintained pipe organs, and established
choirs. Each liturgical space is a visual and acoustic masterpiece. Sitting
on the Holy Redeemer site is Notre Dame Elementary School, serving the
catholic community of the entire county. The new director would also serve as
choir director for the elementary liturgical choir which sings school Mass
weekly and joins the adult choirs on Sunday about 6 times a year and for some
special programs. Familiarity with the RSCM Voice for Life program would be
an advantage.
The new director would have a degree in music with organ and choral emphasis.
Organ improvisatory skills, spirited and creative musical leadership from the
bench, a good understanding of the magisterial documents related to music
including  Tra le Sollecitudini, Musica Sacrae and Sacrosanctum Concilium,
good people and organizational skills, the ability to work closely with the
Pastor and the ability to produce weekly worship aids in a timely manner are
essential.  The ability to cantor as well as interpret and accompany chant
notation are advantages. The Music Director would be responsible for 4
weekend Masses, the weekly school mass and all weddings and funerals, as well
as other services that occur throughout the year.
