The First Presbyterian Church of Jackson, Mississippi, is an evangelical church and member of the Presbyterian Church in America. We are seeking either a full-time organ scholar for a period of one – two years, or a permanent organist. Below is given a job description which will need to be tailored somewhat to the gifts of the person employed.

 

Organist/Music Associate

 

General Requirements:

         First Presbyterian Church, Jackson, seeks an accomplished and well-trained organist to work with the Minister of Music in leading the congregation in worship and in preparing the various choirs and instrumental ensembles to use their God-given musical gifts for God’s praise. In addition to being an informed and sensitive musician who is skilled in playing the piano and organ, he/she should also be a confessing Christian be in harmony with the church’s doctrinal positions and strive to live out these things in the home and in ministry at the Church.

 

Specific Responsibilities as Organist:  

 

  1. The Organist will play for all of the worship services of the church and will take sufficient time to prepare carefully and thoughtfully all aspects of the worship music.
  2. The Organist will be committed to regular practice on the organ and piano with the goal of not only keeping up, but also advancing keyboard skills, learning new repertoire and continuing to grow as a musician.
  3. The Organist will play for all rehearsals of the Adult and Student Choirs, both the regularly-scheduled rehearsals as well as special rehearsals as needed. 
  4. The Organist will assist in preparing the choirs for special concerts such as those for Christmas, Easter and oratorio performances, including the

extra sectional rehearsals that are necessary.

  1. The Organist will coach and accompany soloists and ensembles for worship services and other church events as requested.
  2. The Organist will play for weddings and funerals as scheduled. For weddings compensation by the host families will be made at the rate of $300. Funerals will be considered a part of the regular responsibilities of the Organist.
  3. The Organist will assist with providing music for other ministries of the

Church such as the Twin Lakes Fellowship as is feasible.

  1. The Organist will assure that qualified substitute organist/pianists are provided for during vacations or other approved absences.
  2. The Organist will oversee the regular and emergency maintenance of the organs and other keyboard instruments of the church.
  3. The Organist will seek to promote the playing of the organ and piano with the youth of the congregation and will offer lessons to those interested as time permits. Depending on the situation, extra remuneration will be expected from those taking lessons.
  4. The Organist will attend Staff Meetings and other meetings as are part

of the regular function of the ministries of the church.

  1. The Organist will occasionally give organ concerts for the church and community, perhaps in cooperation with other instrumentalists.

 

Specific Responsibilities as Music Associate:

 

  1. As Music Associate the Organist will assist with administrative duties and projects, based on skills and work load, such as coordination of retreats and occasional social gatherings.
  2. The Organist will assist with music engraving projects as required by the

      Ministry for worship bulletins, orchestra scores and parts as well as choral    

      scores.

  1. The Organist will assist with other musical ensembles such as our volunteer brass and string groups as needed.
  2. The Organist will help establish and lead handbell groups for adults, youth and older children.
  3. The Organist will assist with leading sectional rehearsals for the Adult and Student Choirs.
  4. The Organist will perform other such duties as requested by the Music Minister

as would reasonably be associated with such a position, and as time permits.​
