Founded in 1897, St. Mark’s is today a thriving inter-generational and
multi-cultural Episcopal
congregation. With Sunday attendance over 400, Sunday worship includes three
services in
English and one in Spanish.
St. Mark’s now seeks an enthusiastic and energetic team member to lead our
music program in
achieving our vision as follows:
St. Mark’s Music Program Vision:
Music and the arts are means by which St. Mark’s makes known the glory and
presence of God,
providing avenues for spiritual development and participation in ministry.
Anchored by an
experienced adult choir, choirs for young children, a two-manual J.W. Walker
and Sons tracker
organ and two grand pianos, the future of our music program will embrace our
multi-cultural and
inter-generational membership. We are a congregation that learns, knows how
to sing and
enjoys singing a variety of music that represents our community and curiosity
about the world.
Collaborative, nurturing, and all-encompassing describe the foundation for
our music program
which is committed to the Baptismal Covenant and grounded in St. Mark’s
vision: “Rooted in
baptism, growing in faith and branching out into the world.”
Position Available: Immediately
Reports to: Rector
Directly Supervises: Part-time Music Associate
Status: ¾ time to full-time
Essential Functions:
• Music leadership of Sunday worship services, including playing the organ,
and other
services including funerals, weddings, Holy Week and at 8-10 special services
throughout the year.
• Recruit, schedule and rehearse instrumentalists and vocal musicians to
offer their musical
gifts.
• Adult Choir: weekly rehearsal; recruit, retain and coach adult singers.
• Develop a music program for youth, grades 6 – 12.
• Participate in weekly staff meeting, staff retreats and Worship Committee
meetings.
• Manage and develop music resources, including music library, choir room,
tuning and
maintenance of organ and pianos, choir vestments, and copyright licenses.
• Achieve goals for contributions to music program via Friends of Music and
Christmas/Easter music appeals.
• Maintain information about the music program on the church web site.
• Use information technologies, including the parish database system (ACS)
and social
media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, etc.).
• Develop overall strategic and annual plans for music program, including
budget, with
rector and parish leadership.

vision and
values of St. Mark’s. Can teach the vision and values to others.
• Musicality: Play proficiently the pipe organ and piano and can lead other
instrumentalists
for worship; enjoys working with singers of all ages and talents; accesses
and uses a
range of high quality Christian music traditions, including traditional
Anglican
repertoires, as well as Spanish-language, gospel, jazz, early American and
world music.
• Collaborative spirit: Work with all ages and diversity of people. Visible
and known
personally to all church constituencies and to community leaders. Knowledge
of Spanish
preferred and a willingness to learn and advance in Spanish proficiency.
• Personal Conduct: Model respect, accountability and servant leadership.
Minimum Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s Degree in Music, ability to play the organ and direct a
choir.
• 3 years music ministry experience in liturgical church environment
preferred.
• Either AGO service playing certificate or ability to demonstrate at hire
and annually
proficiency at certificate level.
• Candidate must be able to ascend/descend three flights of stairs for
access to organ.
• Meets all parish and diocesan human resources requirements.
Other:
1. Salary is competitive, including pension and health insurance benefits.
2. Four weeks paid vacation every year, preferably in July or August.
Substitute organists
are contracted through the Director of Music and paid by the church.
3. Right of first refusal for music leadership at all weddings and funerals
for a set fee.
4. $1,500 annually to be paid or reimbursed for dues, association fees,
conferences, or
other continuing education with consideration for additional funding as
needed.
5. Have use of church’s music facilities for private teaching.
