Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral seeks a qualified candidate for a newly created
full-time position of Assistant Director of Music and Organist. Applicants
should possess an understanding of Roman Catholic liturgy and musical
tradition. The AD/Organist will be responsible for playing for 2-4 weekend
liturgies, including accompanying the Cathedral choir both in rehearsal and
in liturgies. Additionally, the organist would be expected to play for
Diocesan liturgies, including the Chrism Mass and Ordinations, Holy Week
liturgies, sacraments within the parish and certain events within the
Cathedral school. The desired candidate will also assist the Director of
Music with providing music for weddings and funerals for extra compensation
as assigned. As an Assistant Director of Music, the applicant may be called
upon to assist in the creation and direction of other music ensembles, which
may include youth music ensembles.

In addition to liturgies, the Organist will collaborate with the Director of
Music to assemble a concert series of sacred music (in which the candidate is
expected to perform) and will share in the administrative and clerical duties
of the Cathedral music program.

Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral was dedicated on July 26, 2017. The organ to be
installed is 72 rank/3 manual instrument built by C. B. Fisk Inc. The
installation of the instrument began in February of 2018 and will be
completed by Christmas of 2018. The successful candidate may be involved in
the voicing of the instrument during the installation process. In addition to
the organ, there is a 7’4’’ Bösendorfer Imperial grand piano, which
will be delivered in June of 2018, and a 50-bell carillon, built by the
Verdin Bell and Clock Company. This instrument can be played by a midi
keyboard or by a carillon clavier.

Requirements and Preferences:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Organ Performance or Sacred Music (graduate degree preferred)
  • 3-5 years of experience in a liturgical denomination
  • Ability to improvise
  • Strong sight-reading skills
  • Basic conversational skills in Spanish desired but not required
