Yale Schola Cantorum: Buxtehude & Buene: Membra Jesu nostri and Untitled (Horizons)

Grete Pedersen leads Yale Schola Cantorum in the group's first concert of the season, featuring performances of Dieterich Buxtehude's Membra Jesu nostri and Eivind Buene's Untitled (Horizons).

Composed by Dieterich Buxtehude in 1680, Membra Jesu nostri, BuxWV 75, is a cycle of seven cantatas. Each cantata addresses a part of Jesus' crucified body: feet, knees, hands, side, breast, heart and face.

Composed by Eivind Buene, Untitled (Horizons) is a choral work in three movements, with text fragments derived from the great tradition of classical music for choir, chosen for their ability to say something that rings true in our world today. They do not present any coherent 'story' through the piece, but convey an emotional landscape through sound and associations. The late paintings of Mark Rothko have been important in the composition process, where the music echo his vibrant layers of color split by a lingering horizon.

Yale Schola Cantorum is a chamber choir that performs sacred music from the sixteenth century to the present day in concert settings and choral services around the world. It is sponsored by Yale Institute of Sacred Music and led by new principal conductor Grete Pedersen. Masaaki Suzuki is the ensemble’s principal guest conductor. Open by audition to students from all departments and professional schools across Yale University, the choir has a special interest in historically informed performance practice, often in collaboration with instrumentalists from Juilliard415.
