Assistant Director of Music and Organist (Dallas, TX)

One of the nation’s largest Episcopal churches, Saint Michael has experienced a renaissance in its music program, especially choirs for children and youth in the tradition of English cathedrals and the Royal School of Church Music.  The Assistant Director of Music & Organist will be a key player in continuing the music program’s growth and function.  The successful candidate will possess excellent skills as a church musician, especially accompanying, service playing, and liturgical music planning.  The role also focuses on overseeing formation of probationer choristers.  Additional conducting opportunities are possible depending on interest and skill.

The music program includes the adult choir of approximately 40 members (including 16 staff singers), the chorister program consisting of 3 choirs ranging from Pre-K through high school with weekly ribbon training, and the professional Compline Choir.  Sunday morning choral services typically feature brass or orchestra 4-5 times a year.  Several Choral Evensongs are offered each year, and Choral Mass settings are sung on major feast days.  The music program also includes the Saint Michael Presents concert series.  Prior to Covid-19, plans for choir tours included New York City (adult choir), Atlanta, Boston, and London (choristers).  The 2021-2022 program year has celebrated the church’s 75thanniversary with premieres of commissioned pieces by 8 composers.  The Assistant Director of Music will join a music staff which includes three other full-time staff and a part-time Assistant Choirmaster.
