Job Description:

Saint Luke’s (Episcopal), Darien, CT, is an affirming, socially conscious, and family-friendly congregation focused on building a community and connecting God to the world. The performing and visual arts are central to the life of the parish, supported by both clergy and parishioners. Darien, a coastal town in Fairfield County, is served by the Metro-North New Haven Line, and is less than an hour from NYC’s Grand Central Terminal or forty-five minutes from New Haven’s Union Station.

The Music Program includes the Parish Choir (a semi-professional ensemble that sings mid-September through Pentecost, at monthly Evensong, and/or other occasions). Younger Choristers are divided into three additional choirs, affiliated with the Royal School of Church Music in America; a Voice for Life class additionally occurs each week. Repertoire is rooted in the Anglican tradition, incorporating various other styles and traditions.

Job Description Summary

The chosen candidate will assist the Director of Music and Organist with service playing (voluntaries, hymns, psalms, anthems) at weekly 10 AM Sunday services (8 AM every other week), and other appointed times, accompanying choral services and rehearsals. Rehearsals are scheduled Thursdays, 4:30 PM – 9 PM, and Sundays at 9AM. This incorporates assisting with the RCMA Voice for Life class. The position offers the opportunity to conduct ensembles and to work directly with the Choristers, learning the ins and outs of working with young singers in a large parish setting. The Assistant Organist is also expected to participate in services like Ash Wednesday, Holy Week and Easter, and Christmas Eve/Day. A meeting with the Director of Music occurs on a weekly basis.

Compensation is competitive, offering a negotiable salary commensurate to skill and education. On-campus housing, including utilities, is also available. The position is Part Time, approx. 10-12 hrs/week. The Assistant plays ever-other-week Mid-June through the end of August. Funerals or Weddings are at additional compensation in line with expectations of NYC Metro area musicians.
