Assistant/Associate Director of Music and Organist St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, a large and vibrant parish in downtown San Antonio, Texas, seeks a full-time Associate Director of Music to begin in August 2022. The Associate Director of Music will assist the Director of Music in running St. Mark’s multi-faceted music program, including the St. Cecilia Music Series. The ideal candidate should be collegial and a team-player, possesses strong playing and conducting skills, and a firm commitment to ministry. Experience working within the Episcopal Church is preferred but not required. The Associate position comes with full benefits and a salary commensurate with education and experience. The Associate Director of Music supports the Director of Music as an integral part of fulfilling St. Mark’s Core Vocation. St. Mark’s enjoys a great tradition of music in worship and in concert. Our choirs include children and youth of all ages, adult volunteers, staff singers, and choral scholars (high school and college students who commit to spending a year of musical formation in the St. Mark’s music program). Together they provide music for the many services that are offered throughout the year. The Chorister program is based on the RSCM model. Choristers rehearse weekly and sing at the 9:00 liturgy with staff singers during the academic year. The St. Mark’s choir, comprised of eight staff singers and 40-50 volunteers, sings at the 11:15 liturgy, monthly choral Evensong, concerts, A Festival of Lessons and Carols, and Holy Week/Easter liturgies. The Associate Director of Music will serve as the organist for two choir residencies in July 2023 at St. Mary’s Cathedral, Edinburgh, and St. Paul’s Cathedral, London. Duties and Responsibilities include, but not limited to: - Shares service playing with the Director of Music - Accompanying the choirs in rehearsals and services - Opportunities for conducting the various choirs especially in the absence of the Director of Music - Production of worship leaflets - Tracks attendance, absences, and substitutes - Assists the Director of Music and clergy in liturgical planning - Assists in managing music department communications and social media - Takes an active role in chorister recruitment and teaching chorister curriculum - Attends weekly staff and music department meetings - Helps manage the music library/database with the music administrator - Plays weddings and funerals for extra compensation as assigned - Assists in tracking/scheduling maintenance of the Austin-Kegg organ and grand pianos Qualifications: - Masters or Doctorate degree in organ performance and/or sacred music - Strong skills in hymn playing, improvising, and conducting - Broad organ repertoire - Strong oral, written, and interpersonal skills - Familiarity with Sibelius or Finale preferred - Good organizational skills - Creative thinker and goal-driven Benefits: - Health, vision, and dental insurance - Health Savings Account - Pension - Continuing education/professional development allowance - Four weeks paid vacation - Two weeks continuing education/professional development - Flexible time away for recitals Applications should include the following: - Cover letter - Résumé - Three references - Links to recordings of two organ works in contrasting style, a choral accompaniment, and a hymn - Deadline for application is April 8, 2022 - Please send all materials and any questions to Jon Johnson: jjohnson@stmarks-sa.org - More information about St. Mark’s: www.stmarks-sa.org
