St. James Cathedral is a growing and progressive Episcopal congregation in the heart of downtown Chicago. St. James has a deep history of excellence in church music, and previous organists have included Dudley Buck, Clarence Dickinson, and Leo Sowerby. The Cathedral Choir comprises 32 voices, half professional and half auditioned voluntary singers, and sings Choral Eucharist at 11am and Evensong monthly, in addition to other special services. The Cathedral Chorister program, started just four years ago, forms young singers in the RSCM model and provides music for the 9am service and weekly Wednesday Evensongs. Additionally, St. James Cathedral hosts dozens of concerts throughout the year, especially our popular Rush Hour summer series.

Position Summary
St. James Cathedral in Chicago seeks a full-time Associate Director of Music to begin in summer 2022. The Associate Director of Music will assist Director of Music Stephen Buzard in running the cathedral’s multi-faceted music program. The ideal candidate possesses strong playing and conducting skills, a healthy work ethic, and a firm commitment to ministry. Experience working within the Episcopal Church is preferred but not required. The Associate position comes with full benefits and a salary commensurate with education and experience.

Duties and Responsibilities

·       Sharing service playing with the Director of Music

·       Accompanying the choirs in rehearsals and services

·       Conducting the choirs, especially in the absence of the Director of Music

·       Playing or conducting for weddings, funerals, and diocesan services

·       Tracking attendance and absences, and managing the choir payroll

·       Assisting the Director of Music and the Dean in liturgical planning

·       Managing music department communications and social media

·       Envisioning and executing new musical initiatives, in collaboration with the staff

·       Attending weekly staff meeting

·       All other duties as assigned by the Director of Music
