The Episcopal Church of the Mediator is seeking a Director of Music to start in Fall or Advent of 2022. They will serve at all sung parish liturgies and arrange music for all funerals and weddings. The Director of Music will serve as the primary music educator for the parish and lead weekly choir rehearsals with volunteers and 3-4 staff singers. We seek a community builder who values and engages talent within the parish and the surrounding community (including young musicians, composers, and instrumentalists).

 

The successful candidate will be a good steward of our rich musical legacy including traditional organ music, hymns (Hymnal 1982), chant, and choral music in the Anglican tradition, but also be open to spirituals, folk music, Latinx musical repertoire, and contemporary hymns and anthems. 

 

The Episcopal Church of the Mediator is a welcoming community of faith located in the historic West Park district of Allentown, Pennsylvania (90 miles from New York City and 60 miles from Philadelphia). We are located within walking distance of Muhlenberg College and Cedar Crest College. Music is a core value of the congregation and clergy. Duties: 

  • Musical leadership for liturgies:

    • Choral Eucharist (choral Morning Prayer periodically), Sunday mornings at 9am in the program year; 9am simple sung Eucharist during the summer

    • Non-Sunday major feasts (Christmas, Holy Week) 

    • 4 Evensongs / Lessons & Carols annually 

  • Weekly choir rehearsals in the program year

  • Practice and preparation of hymns, service music, accompaniments, and voluntaries

  • Programming of liturgical music, in consultation with the Rector and Worship Committee 

    • Collaboration with the Rector and Parish Administrator on the editing/proofing of music in the weekly leaflets

  • Regular office hours and meetings with the Rector and staff

Education: 

  • Demonstration of substantial training and musicianship. 

  • A degree in music and/or certifications from the AGO is/are desirable, but not required. 

  • Knowledge of Spanish or competency in Latino liturgical music is desirable. 

 

Time & Compensation: 

Part-time salaried; ⅜ time (13-18 hours per week); salary according to Association of Anglican Musicians guidelines, and commensurate with skill and experience. See: https://anglicanmusicians.org/salary-guidelines/
