Director of Church Music (Organist and Choir Director)

College Evangelical Lutheran Church – Salem, Virginia

Starting Date:  Flexible

 

College Evangelical Lutheran Church (Salem, Virginia) seeks applications for a part-time Director of Church Music (Organist and Choir Director) position. The weekly working hours will average 20-25 hours per week with the understanding that some weeks may require more than 25 hours and some weeks fewer than 20 hours. Scheduling will be determined by the Director of Church Music in consultation with the Pastor.

 

Base salary is negotiable, commensurate with education and experience. Compensation also includes: two (2) weeks’ vacation annually, plus $500 for continuing education allowance. Additional compensation for weddings is provided. There is no additional compensation for funerals.

 

The responsibilities and expectations of the Director of Church Music (Organist and Choir Director) include the following:

  • Serve as organist for worship services, funerals, and weddings and other services (such as mid-week Lenten and Holy Week)
  • Direct, develop, and recruit adult, children’s/youth, and handbell choirs;
  • Conduct weekly choir rehearsals
  • Under the direction of the Pastor, assist with planning for Sunday worship services and midweek and special services as required
  • Strive for proficiency with pipe organ and knowledge of Lutheran musical heritage;
  • Serve as staff liaison to the Worship and Music Ministry Team
  • Assist the congregation in finding a substitute when necessary

 

Position Qualifications:

 

Required:

  • Pipe organ skills for leading congregational singing
  • Experience in choral direction and accompaniment
  • Ability to perform and lead various styles of sacred music
  • Ability to work with and inspire volunteer choir members and various other musicians
  • High level of overall musicianship
  • Ability to work with multiple age groups from children to adults
  • Good personal communication skills (written, verbal, and listening) are essential.

 

Preferred:

  • Knowledge of Liturgical worship principles
  • Bachelor of Arts in Music
