Job Description:

Emanuel Lutheran Church-ELCA seeks a talented and dynamic musician to provide leadership for its music programs.

Candidate should have a sincere passion for a wide variety of musical styles including classical, ethnic, folk, jazz, blues, and praise music, and be able to incorporate the music in Lutheran worship settings. Candidates should also be an experienced choral conductor and proficient in playing both organ and piano. In addition, the ability to work collaboratively is essential.

Emanuel has a long tradition of excellence in music. There are two choral groups; the Anthem Choir and the New Day Singers. Both groups sing at the same Sunday service each week. The Anthem Choir generally sings more traditional music whereas the New Day Singers focus on more contemporary styles. Both choirs are supplemented by paid section leaders. Instruments include a Cassavant organ, a Steinway grand piano, harpsichord, handbells, timpani, and several small, varied percussion instruments.

There is one Sunday morning service throughout the year. During Lent, mid-week services are often done collaboratively with other local congregations with the Director of Music coordinating and leading the music for these interfaith services. Christmas Eve has two (sometimes three) services. The Director of Music is also an important resource for funerals, memorial services, and weddings.

This is a salaried position and the range of compensation is $25,000-$45,000 (based on an average 20 hours/week). The salary is negotiable and will be based on the candidate's level of education and years of experience, as outlined in the Association of Lutheran Church Musician Guidelines (updated 2022).

Candidates should submit a cover letter and resume with three references to: Search Committee, Attn: Nancy Whiton, Emanuel Lutheran Church, 60 Church Street, Manchester, CT 06040.
