Basilica of the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Charleston, W.Va. is looking for a pastoral musician. Responsibilities include overseeing the selection of music for liturgies, substituting for our organist, directing the choir, cantoring when necessary, preparing worship aids and expanding our current music program. Candidates should have a BA degree or higher in a music field, or other field, if musically trained, excellent organ/keyboard/choral conducting skills and vocal technique and be familiar with music notation software. A practicing Catholic is preferred but not required. Must have a knowledge of Catholic theology. Conversant with a variety of liturgical styles including contemporary, classical, and traditional. Willingness to execute music planning for the liturgical year with a blended approach that will enable the assembly to sing. Working hours are flexible and include weekends and some evenings.

Preface:

The Second Vatican Ecumenical Council 5 March 1967, included “Musicam Sacram.” It stated, in part, that the pastors of souls, musicians, and the faithful should unite “their efforts to attain the true purpose of sacred music, which is the glory of God and the sanctification of the faithful.” 

Therefore, the DMM will be responsible for ensuring quality music and liturgical celebrations that enhance the full, active and conscious participation of our Sacred Heart family. 

Responsibilities: 

1. Serve as the organist for at least three liturgies per weekend and ensure music at daily Mass as determined in collaboration with the rector. 

2. Conduct choir rehearsals and liturgies where the choir is present. 

3. Serve as cantor when needed. 

4. Ensure replacement musicians when applicable. 

5. Select music for weekend and selected daily Masses, rituals, and related events 

6. Build and work with choir and cantors 

7. Prepare worship aids for all masses and special events that include music 

8. Coordinate music for weddings and funerals in collaboration with organist and rector 

9. Collaborate with teachers from SHGS and CCHS, joining those student groups with the Basilica Choir when appropriate. 

10. Be responsible for music for special Mass celebrations including, but not limited to, Holy Days of Obligation, Feast of the Sacred Heart (our patron), Lenten Liturgy of the Hours (Evening Prayer), Stations of the Cross, the Triduum, Easter, Divine Mercy, Rosary Rally, Advent, Lessons and Carols, Christmas 

11. Coordinate with the Filipino Community and principal organist for Santo Nino Novena 

12. Publish calendars of upcoming musical events well in advance in weekly parish bulletin and on website 

13. Research, order, and maintain the parish music library 

14. Collaborate with the Diocesan office of Worship and Sacraments for planning of Diocesan liturgical celebrations, especially those were the Bishop is the principal celebrant. 

15. Collaborate with the Diocesan Director of Music on developing special musical programs and formation opportunities for local pastoral musicians. 

16. Serve as the local NPM chapter liaison for the Southern part of the Diocese. 

17. Attend meetings of the Diocesan Music Consulters and share that information with the Co-Cathedral staff. 

Qualifications: 

1. BA or higher in music, or other field if musically trained 

2. Demonstrate excellent organ/keyboard/choral conducting skills, vocal technique 

3. Preferably a practicing Catholic (or at least respectful of our Catholic faith, traditions, and our sacred spaces 

4. Knowledge of Catholic liturgy, including the Roman Missal, Lectionary, liturgical documents and music resources 

5. Possess a spirit of collaboration and ability to work well with others 

6. Be proficient and conversant with a variety of styles of Catholic liturgical music 

7. Be skilled in a blended approach to liturgical music planning that enables the assembly to sing. 

8. Demonstrate commitment to prayer life and spiritual enrichment 

9. Have an understanding of their position as pastoral ministry 

10. Openness to seek continued professional education and spiritual formation 

11. Be familiar with music notation software (such as Finale and Sibelius) 

12. Be capable of operating and monitoring the parish’s live sound system
