Interim Organist (Norwalk, Connecticut)

Organization Name:
St. Paul's on the Green
Salary Range:

Job Description:

St. Paul's Episcopal Church on the Green in Norwalk, Connecticut is seeking an Interim Organist for the academic year of 2021-2022. St. Paul's has a history of rich choral music and is home to both a restored 1919 Steinway M piano and a 3-manual 1928 Skinner organ, rebuilt and enlarged by Reuter in 2006.

St. Paul’s is in the midst of several transitions: recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic; a 3-year process to call a new rector; and a transitional year for the music program following the departure of the Director of Music. St. Paul’s seeks an adaptable and engaged candidate for the role of Interim Organist who will take on the challenges and opportunities of this time with optimism and ingenuity.

This position is distinct from that of an Organ Scholar in that there will not be another organist on staff to provide mentorship and guidance related to organ playing. The candidate should therefore be an experienced and confident church musician with a background in choral music and organ improvisation. The Interim Organist will report to and work with the Interim Choral Director in planning, rehearsing, and carrying out the music program at St. Paul’s.

Particular duties of the Interim Organist include:

  • playing hymns, anthems, voluntaries, and other music at Sunday morning services (currently planned for 9 and 11am) and attending rehearsals prior to those services

  • assisting (or leading) Thursday evening rehearsals with choristers and adult singers

  • meeting the Interim Choral Director weekly at a mutually agreeable time

  • participating in services for Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, the Easter Vigil, and Easter Sunday

  • accompanying extra rehearsals, services, or events as needed (5-6 per year)

  • planning ahead and managing potential scheduling conflicts in consultation with the Interim Choral Director

To apply, please send a resume and contact information for three references to Director of Music Jake Street: street@stpaulsnorwalk.org.

Applicants will be asked to interview with Jake and the Interim Choral Director in person (preferred) or over Zoom. The interview will include hymn-playing and choral conducting components.
