THE PINE STREET PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH 310 North Third Street Harrisburg, PA 17101 Position Description for the Minister of Music and Worship – ver. 4/1/19 OVERALL STRUCTURE, FUNCTION AND OBJECTIVE OF THE POSITION: To develop and enhance the worship life of the congregation and the ministry of music through creative leadership. The Senior Pastor is responsible for the direction and leadership of the services of worship, and supervises the work of the Minister of Music and Worship. CHARACTERISTICS REQUIRED: This position requires a person with an active commitment of faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, and a desire to serve Christ in and through the Church. The Minister of Music and Worship will exhibit the following gifts: 1) outstanding ability to play the organ and piano; 2) mastery in conducting various choirs and musical ensembles; 3) professional knowledge of liturgy and worship styles; 4) excellent interpersonal skills; 5) the ability to convey joy and enthusiasm to other musicians and the congregation; 6) openness and skill in diversity of musical expression; 7) the ability to organize and to manage multiple projects; 8) the ability to work collegially and respectfully with staff, officers, and volunteers; 9) the insight that music is a ministry that addresses the spiritual needs of people of all ages; 10) skills in teaching hymns and new forms of musical expressions to the congregation The Minister of Music and Worship shall have the Degree of Bachelor or Master of Music, preferably in Sacred Music or its equivalent, with professional experience on a church staff, or other compelling evidence of readiness for this position. In addition, the Minister must be physically able to perform all the requirements of the job. Organist and Choir Director a) Play the organ and/or piano for all services of worship, including weddings, funerals, and other special services. b) Direct, rehearse, conduct, and administer the music programs of: i. The Chancel Choir ii. Paid Choral Section Leaders i. Children’s and/or Youth Choirs ii. Hand Bell Choirs iii. Vocal Soloists and Ensembles iv. Instrumental Soloists and Ensembles v. Other vocal or instrumental groups as may be needed or desired. c) Interview, hire, and supervise: i. Paid Choral Section Leaders ii. Soloists and Instrumental accompanists iii. Substitute organists, pianists and/or choir directors iv. Supplemental musical support personnel. v. Organ and/or Vocal Scholars 2. Be thoroughly acquainted with the Strategic Plan of Pine Street Presbyterian Church, and dedicated to the Plan’s fulfillment. 3. Recruit participants for musical ensembles, groups, and programs in the Church. 4. Be the sole judge and final arbiter as to the competence of any person requesting to perform music at Pine Street Church. 5. Select and schedule weekly and special musical offerings in conjunction with the Senior Pastor. 6. In concert with the Senior Pastor, assist in the preparation of the liturgy for publication in the service bulletins, including the submission of the texts of the weekly anthems and other choral works. 7. Direct a program that enriches the congregation’s knowledge of hymns, music, and liturgy. 8. Serve as a resource person for the Senior Pastor, Session, Trustees, staff, and any other Church member in all matters pertaining to the musical life of the Church. 9. Attend all meetings of the professional and support staff of the Church. Attend meetings of Session by special invitation. 10. Assist in preparation of the annual budget, recommending appropriate allocations for each area of program responsibility. 11. Purchase and obtain all necessary musical supplies, consistent with the Church’s budget and relevant financial guidelines. 12. Manage and care for the organ and all other musical instruments and ancillary equipment, including musical scores, choir robes, and any other additional worship properties associated with the musical life of the Church. 13. Program and operate the carillon. 14. Organize and administer Music at Pine Street, (MAPS, the Church music performance series), including offering ideas for programming, preparing advertising, publishing the annual brochure, and overseeing the annual fund-raising process. 15. Develop productive and effective relationships with musician colleagues in the Central Pennsylvania area 16. Visit program participants in hospitals, homes, and nursing homes. 17. Seek out and visit potential Church members. 18. Have the privilege of teaching vocal, choral, instrumental, and keyboard music for the Minister’s own personal benefit and profit, using the instruments and facilities of the Church.
