Overview:

The Episcopal Church of the Heavenly Rest, on Manhattan’s Upper East Side is a vibrant parish committed to being an inclusive home for all people. We are an open community experiencing God together, regardless of race, sexual identity or orientation.

We are following Jesus’ call to create a Bigger Table of welcome and invitation that is both in-person and online --- inside our beautiful church, out in our neighborhood, and wherever the Holy Spirit gathers us. 

We will continue to be a community of deep belonging for our parishioners.  We also want to be an active and lively presence in our neighborhood— inviting our 10,000+ neighbors into community.  

Music has always been an important part of our parish life and will play a central role in gathering our Parish and neighborhood(s) post-pandemic.  Our music will focus on gathering an in-person community while we continue to live-stream some of our liturgies. We will continue to add musical diversity to our liturgies and our repertoire.

We want to fill our Church and fill the neighborhood with music.

 

The Position:

The Director of Music will develop and lead a music program, building on a strong musical tradition, that gathers the Parish as it returns to in-person, post-pandemic worship and also invites the church’s 10,000+ neighbors into community.

The Director of Music is a senior member of the church’s staff and reports to the Rector.

 

Principal Duties:

  • Plan liturgical music, including service music and psalm tones, in consultation with the Rector and clergy. Choose all music content including festival services such as Advent Lessons and Carols, Christmas, Holy Week, & the annual Christmas Pageant.This includes organ music, anthems, and hymns.

  • Create a number of music events that invite both the Parish and the wider community.

  • Responsible for conductor and organist coverage for all services.

  • Lead, direct and support Adult Choir, both paid singers and parishioner volunteers. 

  • Lead, direct and support the handbell choir.

  • Lead the Heavenly Rest Choristers with the Program Associate for Children, Youth, Music & Outreach 

  • Manage the music budget including that of the paid choir and staff.  

  • Manage logistics of worship with frontline staff.

  • Ensure that organ and piano are in tune and repaired as needed..

 

Qualifications:

  • Highly skilled musician: choral conductor, pianist, organist

  • Experience and knowledge of Episcopal liturgy and music.

  • Experience with children and music education.

  • Knowledge and experience with diverse musical traditions is a plus.

  • Collaborative, collegial and flexible with excellent interpersonal skills. Willing to be available as needed. 

  • Excellent pastoral skills and commitment to ministry.

  • A Bachelor’s degree at minimum, advanced degree preferred.
