Job Description: 

St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, South Windsor, CT, is a Eucharistically-centered parish that meets regularly for Sunday morning worship and significant Holy Days. The use of traditional sacred and contemporary music through preludes, hymns, canticles, anthems, and choral pieces enrich our worship and are a valued part of our musical and liturgical tradition and expression.

We seek a person whose interest in and passion for music embraces these norms, and who would enjoy sharing his or her musical gifts with us as Organist on organ and keyboard, and as Choir director and accompanist. We invite the Organist/Choir Director to be a participating member of our community in worship and other endeavors. Training as a church musician is desired, but not required.

As such:

The Organist/Choir Director agrees to be available for all scheduled principle church services (one per Sunday or Holy Day). In collaboration with the Clergy or other appointed member of the parish, the Organist/Choir Director will help select worship music to be sung by the congregation and choir, and from time to time, others in the community who offer their musical gifts. He/She will be the first person contacted to play at weddings and funerals whenever possible. This staff position reports to the Rector.

Duties during regular church services may include, but are not limited to, providing music for: Prelude, introit, hymns, service music, offertory, doxology, communion, postlude, accompany choir and soloists (if necessary), special music on occasion.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work

This is a quarter time (8-12 hours per week), exempt position, with a primary exception to be in preparation for (and during) Holy Week and the Christmas season.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Organ and keyboard proficiency.

Preferred:

  • Experience in church settings and with liturgical music.
  • Experience working with and directing a choir.
  • Experience with traditional, contemporary, and blended, instrumental, and choral music.

Enthusiasm, flexibility, a sense of humor, and the ability to lead are critical attributes. We welcome innovation and creativity in the pursuit of a vibrant music program.

Compensation:

Negotiable, commensurate with experience.

Other information:

Our organ is a Rogers 795 electric organ. The keyboard is a Roland RD-2000.
