Christ the King is a small congregation that loves to sing. We are seeking a cantor who can help nurture the congregation’s song and help the assembly build its capacity to sing not only its existing repertoire of hymnody but also new and new-to-us music that connects us with the global church, deepens our spirituality, and connects us to our baptismal call to serve the world and share the good news with the community. Keyboard skills strongly preferred, but other musical leadership is welcomed.

The required hours for this position are all on Sunday morning except your personal preparation and practice time on your own schedule and seasonal planning with the pastor scheduled at your convenience. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

1.Prepare and play organ/piano/keyboard and choral music, which includes the hymns, the liturgy, an offering anthem/offertory, a prelude, and a postlude, for all Sunday morning services and other seasonal services of the church such as Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter, and Pentecost.

2.Direct and accompany the choir in one rehearsal per week, usually for ½ - ¾ hour before the worship service, toward leadership of and participation in worship each Sunday. In addition, prepare the choir for special services throughout the Church year such as Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter, and Pentecost, as determined by consultation with musicians, the Pastor, and the Worship and Music Committee.

3.The Worship and Music committee may require the Part-Time Organist and Choir Director to attend meetings on occasion and to participate with other church staff in the programmatic planning for the congregation.

4.Keep the Worship and Music committee apprised of the current condition of the organ and piano and specifying any necessary maintenance.

5.Work with the Worship and Music committee to purchase any music and music supplies that might be needed.

6.Assist in finding a substitute when necessary.

Skills and Qualifications:

1.Knowledge and experience of organ/piano/keyboard with the ability sufficient to lead the assembly and the choir in singing hymns, liturgy, and easy anthems, and to play easy accompaniments at sight.

2.Knowledge of appropriate church music (e.g., classical, contemporary, folk, gospel, etc.) and themes of the Church Year, and the role of music in Lutheran worship.

3.Ability to work well with others.

Average of 7 hrs/wk (more on weeks when additional services occur as listed above)

Salary commensurate with skill and experience based on ALCM guidelines.
