Job Description: 

St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Hanover, Virginia, seeks a part-time, contracted combined role of Organist/Music Director (“Director”) for one Sunday service per week, beginning summer 2019. Additional required services on Christmas Eve (2), Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Easter morning (2), and the evening before Thanksgiving. Director will be responsible for partnering with the Rector in mission and ministry to lead and develop the music program of the parish. Primary obligations include making music selections (in collaboration with the Rector), all worship accompaniment, leading the congregation in the musical elements of worship, and leading one adult choir September – June, including coordinating and conducting their rehearsals. Current choir rehearsals are on Sundays. St. Paul’s is a rural, active, family parish, averaging 100 congregants in attendance each week, with 75 at the main service, and room for a choir of 15. Organ is a two-manual Allen; piano in parish hall available for rehearsal. In addition to existing choral library, resources include Episcopal Hymnal (1982); Wonder, Love, and Praise; and Lift Every Voice and Sing II. Ideal candidates should be familiar with Episcopal liturgical tradition, comfortable with various liturgical styles, and open to adapting to fit the needs of the congregation. Experience with both the organ and directing an adult choir preferred. Compensation range is $15,000 to $20,000 per annum, commensurate with experience. Contract allots 8-10 hours per week, with 4 Sundays of paid vacation. Budget for music, supplies, and continuing education is negotiable.
