Unlike her male counterparts, graduate student Margaret Crosby did not receive a salary and had to pay her own travel expenses. Her responsibilities included the photographic catalogue and projects on the decorated ceiling tiles from the synagogue and other buildings as well as the graffiti. Comte Robert du Mesnil du Buisson, associate director appointed by the French Academy, joined the project during the sixth season and oversaw much of the synagogue excavation. The highly complex task of removing the paintings from the site and reinstalling them in a reconstruction in the National Museum of Damascus, however, fell to Henry Pearson, a graduate student of architecture at Yale.
