St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, a diverse, large, and vibrant parish in the Diocese of Atlanta, seeks a full-time Organ Scholar to begin in June, or at a mutually agreed upon time. The position is designed for a mature and talented organist seeking a gap year or post-graduate experience to learn and grow in a supportive and active church music program. The position has a yearly contract with an opportunity for a second-year renewal. In addition to sharing service playing responsibilities with the Director of Music, the Organ Scholar will also collaborate with the Associate Director of Children &amp; Youth Music in supporting St. Luke’s growing chorister program. The Organ Scholar reports to the Director of Music.
Duties and Responsibilities: • Share service playing with the Director of Music for all liturgies throughout the year, except for such time off as outlined in the employment contract • With guidance and support from the Director of Music, the Organ Scholar will prepare hymns, service music, and accompaniments for choral anthems • Accompany weekly scheduled rehearsals for children and adult choirs • Assist librarians in the distribution of St. Luke’s extensive music library • Keep a log of required maintenance for the Alston Memorial Organ • Assist with administrative tasks for the music program and Music at St. Luke’s series. • Attend weekly staff meetings • Be an active and engaged member of St. Luke’s professional staff
Education and Qualifications: Candidates must: • hold a bachelor’s degree in organ performance or sacred music with organ as primary instrument • possess superior oral, written, and interpersonal skills • be committed to further professional development as a church musician
St. Luke's instruments include a 90-rank Austin Organ, with 5-manual chancel console and 2-manual gallery console, three Steinway grand pianos; a Richard Kingston harpsichord, and St. Luke’s bell tower.
