Title:  Organist

Primary Responsibility/Scope:
To help the Cathedral live into its vision of “being the heart of God for
the heart of Charleston” by beautifying worship with choral, organ, and
instrumental music of a high standard, making disciples in and through the
Choral Ministry, and building partnerships to engage the neighborhood and
city more and more with the living tradition of Anglican music and liturgy.

Tasks:
•       Lead congregational music and accompany choral music at Sunday Choral
Holy Communion at the organ, choosing seasonally appropriate organ
voluntaries.
•       Accompany all scheduled choir rehearsals (regular rehearsals are
Wednesdays from 6-7:30pm and Sundays from 8:30-9am.)
•       Submit organ voluntaries in a timely manner for inclusion in service
bulletins.
•       On the occasion (three to four Sundays a year) that there is a combined
service, work in partnership with the Choral Ministry Director and
Contemporary Music Director to organize the music and liturgy.
•       Give the Choral Ministry Director plenty of advance notice when planning
to be absent, and assist with finding substitute organists as needed.
•       Assist the Choral Ministry Director with overseeing the maintenance of
the Cathedral’s organs, pianos, and handbells.
•       The Organist may use the facilities for private teaching and coaching.

Responsibilities:
•       Model for the choirs a servant’s heart toward musical leadership at
worship.
•       Uphold high musical standards while fostering a sense of teamwork,
commitment, and joy through fellowship, mutual care, and spiritual growth.
•       Work collegially with the clergy, staff, and parishioners.

Qualifications:
•       Knowledge and command of a large variety of hymnody, organ literature,
and choral literature appropriate to the liturgical year.
•       Service playing skills including hymn playing, accompanying,
improvisation, and transposition.
•       Experience and confidence in the area of choir training and conducting,
for both children and adults is desirable, but not required.
•       People skills: interfacing effectively with both volunteer and
professional musicians.
•       Computer skills: bulletin creation (i.e. Word, Publisher), music notation
software (i.e. Sibelius or Finale) is desirable, but not required.

Hours/Time Commitment:
8 hours per week

Education:
Bachelor’s degree required

Previous Experience (Volunteer or Professional):
1-2 years regular experience playing liturgies as organist and choral
accompanist.
