Job Description:

(National Cathedral also welcomes applications for their substitute roster for sopranos, tenors, and basses - please email musicoffice@cathedral.org for more information)

As a core member of the choir, you are offered 6 services a week, 5 days a week (Sunday-Thursday) during the academic year with a reduced schedule during the summer. Regular members of the choir are expected to fulfill 70% of their offered calls but can offer the others to those on the substitute roster. Core members of the choir are also offered additional elective opportunities including concerts, weddings, funerals, and services of national significance.

The choir is composed of 9 professional singers (3 each of ATB), along with treble choristers from the two resident schools on the Cathedral Close or professional sopranos. With an average of 6 calls per week during the academic year, the pay from this position is sufficient to support relocation to the Washington D.C. area.

  • Sunday Eucharist: The call runs from 10 am–12:45 pm, with the service beginning at 11:15 am.
  • Sunday Evensong: The call runs from 2:45 pm–5 pm, with the service beginning at 4 pm.
  • Weekday Evensong: Monday through Thursday throughout the academic year. The call runs from 4:20 pm–pm, with Evensong service beginning at 5 pm.

To apply, please email the Cathedral Music Office at musicoffice@cathedral.org with a performance resume and two vocal samples. If called for an audition, singers will be required to perform two contrasting songs, one of which must be from the Baroque period. Sight-reading is a critical skill and will be assessed as part of the audition. Please indicate in the body of your email to which position you are applying. Applications are due April 1.
