Professor James (Jimmy) Taylor, professor in the practice of voice at the Yale Institute of Sacred Music and Yale School of Music, spent the last week of September in Dortmund, Germany, judging the International Schubert Competition. Established in 1987, the competition awards prizes to international candidates in the categories of piano and LiedDuo and is aimed at young and talented musicians of the very highest professional standard. This is Taylor’s second time serving on the jury.
Through the associated programming, the competition introduces participants and audiences to Schubert’s world of ideas and contributes to the cultural activities in the Ruhr region. Visitors from all over the world are drawn to the high-profile venue in the former mining area—the atmospheric compressor hall of the Hansa Coking Plant, which is a listed building. At Yale, Professor Taylor teaches a studio of graduate-level vocalists in the early music, oratorio, and art song program. Also a world-renowned tenor, Taylor has performed throughout the United States, South America, Japan, Israel, and in virtually all of the major concert halls of Europe.
