St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, a diverse, large, and vibrant parish in the Diocese of Atlanta, seeks a full-time Assistant Organist.  The position is designed for a recent graduate seeking an opportunity to learn and grow in a supportive and active music program. The position will have a yearly contract with an opportunity for renewal for a maximum of two years.

In addition to sharing service playing duties, the Assistant Organist will also collaborate with the Associate Director of Children & Youth Music in supporting the St. Luke’s growing RSCM-affiliated chorister program. The Assistant Organist reports to the Director of Music.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist in regular organ playing for all Sunday liturgies and special services of the liturgical year, except for such time off as outlined in the employment contract.
  • With support and guidance from the Director of Music, the Assistant Organist will prepare service music and accompaniments for choral anthems.
  • Accompany rehearsals for children, youth and adult choirs.
  • Assist librarians in the maintenance and distribution of St. Luke’s music library.
  • Keep a log of necessary maintenance for the Alston Memorial Organ.
  • Assist as needed with administrative tasks for the music program.
  • Attend weekly staff meetings.  
  • Be an active and engaged presence as a member of St. Luke’s professional staff.

Education and Qualifications:

Candidates must:

  • hold a bachelor’s degree in organ performance or sacred music (with organ as primary instrument);
  • possess superior oral, written, and interpersonal skills;
  • be committed to further professional development as a church musician.

St. Luke's instruments include a 90 rank Austin Organ, with 5 manual chancel console (Cornel Zimmer, 2000) and 2 manual gallery console (Cornel Zimmer, 2019), 1910 Steinway & Sons Model A piano (restored by Faust Harrison in New York); Richard Kingston harpsichord (2000).
