Job Description:

Grace and St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, Colorado Springs is seeking a full-time Director of Music and Organist who will continue our excellent music tradition, while also inspiring growth and excitement.

Worship is at the heart of our identity.  And of course music is an essential part of our worship. Our worship is grounded in the Prayer Book and Anglican music traditions. The Director will work with the clergy to plan, prepare, and lead Sunday morning liturgies, regular choral Evensongs, and feasts, celebrations, and pastoral offices throughout the Church year.

The program currently includes: a highly reputed adult choir including paid section leaders, two youth choirs ranging in age from 2nd through 12th grade, a professional octet specializing in early music and plainsong for Compline and concerts, and a volunteer-directed handbell choir. The program also features two popular concert series: a freely-offered, fully-endowed series organized by the Director that runs during the program year and a volunteer-organized summer jazz series.

Our 1928 Welte organ is in excellent condition and recently underwent a pipework restoration. It has 4 manuals and a new Schoenstein antiphonal, completed in 2020. A full description of the instrument is available on our parish website.  There is also a nine-foot fully-restored Baldwin concert grand piano in the main worship space.

Job Requirements:

Interested parties should: be familiar with Episcopal musical and liturgical traditions; be able to work comfortably and creatively within a classical Anglican program; be a skilled musician, teacher, and conductor; be well-organized and able to administer a large, complex program; have the skills to manage part-time staff; possess the capability to create service bulletins; be willing and able to form relationships within an inter-generational, inclusive congregation.

The youth choir program is an essential and highly valued ministry of the parish.  The Director is expected to rehearse the youth choirs weekly and prepare them to sing in the liturgy.  The Director will also have the opportunity guide young choristers through RSCM ribbon training and organize and lead our annual choir camp, a week of music and fellowship that takes place each summer at our diocesan camp in the Colorado mountains.

This position is full-time (40+ hours) with a $70k salary, health, dental, and pension. Applicants should have at least a Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of five years of church music experience.  We are looking for someone who deeply values their Christian faith, has a passion for parish ministry, and for whom music is a vital expression of their worship.  Close cooperation and coordination with the Rector, clergy, staff, and lay members are expected.
