Director of Music (Erie, PA)

ABOUT THE POSITION

The Cathedral of St. Paul is seeking a full-time Director of Music to serve as the principal musician, organist, and choral director. Working with the Dean, other staff, and parishioners, the Director of Music collaboratively leads, manages, and carries out the music ministry of the Cathedral. We seek a Director who will build upon our music program and engage with the arts community in Erie. The Director will approach liturgy with a theological lens and express our rich Anglican worship tradition in diverse ways. The Director should be comfortable working with all ages and genders, desire to be rooted in the Cathedral’s life, and be invested in the Cathedral’s vision and mission.

OUR DIRECTOR OF MUSIC AND ORGANIST WILL

LITURGY AND MINISTRY

• Serve as the principal organist and music director at Sunday 8am and 10am worship services, as well as occasional Evensongs, Complines, and midweek services.
• Align the musical program and ministry with the larger strategic vision of the Cathedral.
• Program and oversee the planning of all hymns, service music and other musical repertoire used in liturgies, at the direction of and in collaboration with the Dean. This work will include the Liturgical Committee quarterly.
• Nurture the well-being of the entire music program of the Cathedral and every person involved, helping each person to use their gifts to the Glory of God. Create a sense of community among all musicians, fostering an atmosphere of care and support.
• Engage the music ministry in strategic planning and goal setting, in consultation with the Dean and Chapter.
• Guide the congregation and choir in deepening our musical repertoire by incorporating music from a variety of diverse sacred traditions.
• Create and grow a diverse group of new choristers. This program will develop students’ musical skills and abilities, help them sharpen their academic and social skills, introduce them to the distinctive theology, teachings, and traditions of the Episcopal Church, and support them and their parents within a community of care and support.
• Rehearse, provide, and oversee all choral, piano, and organ music for services, including, but not limited to, Sunday worship, Evensong, Compline, Diocesan and community services and pastoral services of marriage and burial.
• Recruit and develop volunteer choir members, offering regular opportunities for amateur singers to participate in our liturgies.
• Oversee the recruitment and management of all paid singers, instrumentalists, and contract musicians.
• Collaborate with the children’s and youth formation programs of the Cathedral.
• Partner with others in the Erie arts and music community and with other musicians in the religious and diocesan community.
• Program a variety of concerts, guest artists, and recitals to supplement the regular liturgical life of the Cathedral, with a focus on amplifying and featuring artists of many different backgrounds and cultures, including those from historically non-dominant backgrounds and perspectives.
