Director of Music (Redding, CT)
Georgetown Oratory is seeking to appoint an exceptional musician as Director of Music starting May 1st or sooner. The Oratory is the key apostolate of the Jesus Guild, a Public Association and 501(c)(3), established by Bishop Frank J. Caggiano in March 2022 to promote and foster beauty in the sacred arts. Oratory status permits a wide liturgical expression, enabling a deep engagement with the Roman Rite at the service of the Bishop.
The position is intended to be full time, with benefits, but the right candidate may be able to combine this role with a teaching position in higher education, and applications are welcome on a part-time basis. The Music Foundation at the Oratory is in its infancy, so this is an unique opportunity for an ambitious and motivated self-starter to blaze a trail.
Key responsibilities include:
- Oversight of all musical output for both Oratory and Jesus Guild
- Directing the music at all Sunday and Holy Day Masses
- Training the Girls Choir (8-18) in repertoire and vocal technique
- Recruiting 6 x Lay Clerks to form the Oratory Choir of Girls and Men
- Developing a monthly recital series of sacred music in the Diocese
- Overseeing the installation of Skinner Opus 782 in the Oratory Church
The Oratory is a place where the Traditional Roman Rite is celebrated alongside the Novus Ordo Missae and the candidate will need to be proficient in Gregorian chant, as well as enthusiastic about sacred polyphony from all eras and liturgical beauty in all expressions of the Rite. The Oratory uses the Revised English Hymnal and the liturgy has a distinctly English flavor. Familiarity with the English Choral Tradition would be an advantage; aptitude for working with children is essential. Music at the Oratory is generously resourced by private donors.
