Position Summary: The Grace Lutheran Church Musician is responsible for overseeing and leading the music ministry within the church. This role involves playing at services, coordinating and directing the musical activities, selecting appropriate music for choir, rehearsals, and special events, and providing leadership to musicians and vocalists. This position works closely with the pastor and other church staff to create an atmosphere of worship and spiritual growth through music. 

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

Music Selection and Planning: 

● Collaborate with the pastor and worship team to align the music with the worship themes, seasons and overall worship experience, including prelude, postlude, choral anthems, choral and other instrumental selections. 

● Maintain a diverse repertoire that encompasses various musical styles and genres to cater to the congregation's preferences and needs. 

 

Musical Leadership: 

● Lead the congregation in singing and participation during worship services. 

● Conduct rehearsals for the choir, instrumentalists and extra musicians for special services.

● Develop and nurture the musical talents of individuals within the congregation, encouraging their active involvement in the music ministry. 

● Hire supplemental musicians for special services such as Christmas and Easter. 

 

Technical and Administrative Duties: 

● Oversee the maintenance and operation of musical instruments, audiovisual equipment, and other music-related resources. 

● Manage the music library, ensuring a comprehensive collection of sheet music and other resources. 

● Coordinate with the church staff and volunteers to plan and schedule rehearsals, performances, and special music events. 

● Provide an annual report of the music ministry to church leadership. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS 

● Demonstrated proficiency in piano playing, including ability to sight-read music and improvise. 

● GLC has an electronic organ, so some organ experience a plus.

● Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively with volunteers, church members, and other staff members. 

● Flexibility to adapt to various musical styles and genres to meet the needs of the congregation. 

● Strong knowledge of sacred music, including hymns, choral music, and contemporary worship music. 

● Strong organizational and leadership skills to manage rehearsals, schedules, and music resources. 

● Experience in leading and directing church choirs, vocalists, and instrumentalists. 

 

This position is salaried (starting at $12,500), part-time (5-8 hours) with two Sundays per year paid time off.
