Thursday Evening Music Director (Boston, MA)
Old South Church in Boston is seeking a part-time Music Director to join our collaborative and creative team of ministry leaders for our Thursday evening 6pm worship service. The candidate will hire and oversee a small team of musicians to provide music for weekly services. The Thursday evening Music Director will be a creative contemporary musician who is passionate about co-creating communal experiences of worship.
Duties and Responsibilities include:
- Design weekly worship services, collaboratively with the minister, by selecting music that supports weekly and seasonal theme
- Hire and manage band members, including running rehearsals (currently before the service on Thursdays)
- Perform at weekly services as pianist, guitarist, singer, or other instrumentalist serving as worship leader
- Provide musical arrangements (charts, sheet music, etc) for band members in advance of weekly worship services, including printing, scanning, and collating.
- Cultivate and implement vision for contemporary worship using a diverse repertoire of music
- Attend regular planning meetings with the ministerial team
- Communicate effectively with musicians and administrative staff regarding technical needs
Skills Required:
- Knowledge and fluency in a wide range of music styles (contemporary Christian, pop, gospel, hymns, etc)
- Creative, faithful engagement with a diversity Christian traditions and worship styles
- Competence in organizing and creating musical arrangements
- Performance skills as a pianist, singer, guitarist or other instrumentalist.
- Proven experience successfully managing a musical team for regular performances on firm deadlines
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Personable and engaging, able to connect with people in a diverse environment.
