In Memoriam: John Scott

August 13, 2015

A message from ISM Director Martin Jean:

Doubtless, many of you have heard this heartbreaking news, namely, that John Scott, organist and director of music at St. Thomas Church, Fifth Avenue, died earlier today of a heart attack. His wife, Lily, expecting their first child, was by his side.

John was an immense supporter of the ISM. He hired numerous of our music students as both assistant organists and choral singers and hosted the Schola Cantorum on more than one occasion. But beyond that, he was a towering leader in the field of church music, and an inspiration to so many. When I asked him how he hoped to spend his career, he said “I am a liturgical musician.” That was answer enough for me.

The ISM and the world lost a great friend and mentor today. I will confer with David Hill, one of John’s closest friends since college, how the ISM might honor his legacy in the coming year.

Rest in peace, dear John.

Martin Jean
