Detail of painting of procession of women, north wall of baptistery

YUAG, Dura-Europos Collection, negative number e336

This photograph records a detail of the painting of a procession of women in situ before its removal from the site. The painting was located on the baptistery’s north wall on the lower register, below the scenes of Christ healing the paralytic and walking on water: these scenes surrounded initiates as they prepared for baptism. Two veiled women dressed in white carrying torches in their outstretched right arms and bowls in their left hands approach a white structure on the left, decorated with a large star on its top right corner. Other fragmentary figures from the north and east walls indicate that there were originally ten women represented: discussion about their identifications is ongoing.
