Workman in salle aux gradins in Temple of Azzanathkona

YUAG, Dura-Europos Collection, negative number dura-e56~01

The worker in this photograph is seated in the salle aux gradins (room with tiered benches) in the Temple of Azzanathkona. The Greek inscriptions (visible on the fronts of the benches) date between the years 12 and 107 and provide the names of women and their descendants for whom the seats were presumably reserved. The cult relief in situ depicts the goddess Azzanathkona, whose name is Aramaic and most likely derives from the name of the village Anath, on the Euphrates about 120 km from Dura. The altars in front of the relief indicate that ritual activity centered here.
