The Religion, Ecology, and Expressive Culture Initiative

Welcome to the home of the Initiative in Religion, Ecology, and Expressive Culture at the Yale Institute of Sacred Music. Launched in January 2023, the initiative’s aim is to amplify cross-disciplinary and integrative work at the intersection of religion, ecology, and expressive culture. The first three-year phase invites proposals for projects from scholars across the humanities, as well as from artists and practitioners working on the connections linking religion, ritual, and the arts to the non-human world and our ongoing ecological crises.

The initiative will offer important resources to academic audiences and the broader public though the hosting of events and symposia, and the funding of individual and team projects. These projects must specify a particular form of engagement and connect to one or more of the initiative’s three themes. The application process begins with an initial proposal that will be assessed by a group of Yale scholars. Successful proposals will be invited to submit a more detailed plan. Browse the links to the left for more detailed information about our history, mission, details of upcoming events and how to submit a project proposal.
