Description: Susan Hellauer, guest director. Susan Hellauer of Anonymous 4 will direct the Yale Voxtet in a solemn plainchant First Vespers for Christmas, with medieval polyphony from the magnificent Las Huelgas Codex (c. 1300). The Vespers will be presented as it would have been heard in a large Cathedral or Collegiate church in the Middle Ages, with five antiphons and psalms, the Christmas hymn Jesu redemptor omnium, and the Virgin Mary’s canticle of thanksgiving, the Magnificat. The medieval polyphony includes motets, conductus, and tropes from on of the most important sources of liturgical and devotional polyphony and song from the high Middle Ages
