Yale Consort

Yale Consort is the ISM’s newly formed professional vocal ensemble conducted by Professor James O’Donnell. Founded on music from the classical tradition with a focus on Episcopal, Lutheran, and Roman Catholic liturgical traditions, it provides high quality choral music through a series of evening services in local parishes and chapels in New Haven. Applications are now open for 2024-25 Yale Consort auditions.

Consort services also provide a valuable formational experience for Yale music and divinity students who gain crucial real-world experience by serving as organists, readers, and altar servers under expert faculty leadership.

The centuries-old tradition of Choral Evensong encourages quiet contemplation through hymns, psalms, canticles, prayer, and reflection. All are very welcome to attend the weekly Consort services on Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m. beginning on September 24, 2024—details to be posted below soon.

James O’Donnell is professor in the practice of organ and sacred music at the Yale School of Music and the Yale Institute of Sacred Music. Prior to coming to Yale, he was the organist and master of the choristers at Westminster Abbey for twenty-three years.
