Music of  Honegger: Le Roi David and Haydn: Lord Nelson Mass

Richard Cross, narrator

Arthur Honegger made his first big splash in Paris with the 1921 premiere of Le roi David. Originally conceived as incidental music for a play of the same name, Honegger later reworked his successful score into what he termed a “symphonic psalm.” Le roi David employs soloists, choir, and orchestra to recount the complete life of King David, from his days as a humble shepherd to his final disgrace and death. Honegger—influenced both by recent trends and an impending deadline—produced a score in the Neoclassical style. Some movements reflect the influence of the Baroque-era oratorio composers Handel and Bach, while others exhibit the characteristics of Gregorian chant and even jazz.

Yale Glee Club will perform Haydn’s Lord Nelson Mass.
