Event description: “Beautiful Outsiders: Cantorial Performance, Technology and Changing Jewish Identities”
This talk will introduce the cantorial gramophone era “golden age” through the voices of outsider artists who played important roles in fostering a conception of Jewish musical traditionalism. Jeremiah Lockwood will discuss the role that cantorial records and other forms of mediatization played in creating opportunities for artists who did not conform to conservative gender ideologies and religious orthodoxies, and how new media created opportunities for artists to take on roles of sacred authority.
Jeremiah Lockwood is a scholar and musician, working in the fields of Jewish studies, performance studies and ethnomusicology. He is the recipient of the 2021 Salo Baron New Voices in Jewish Studies Award and the 2019-20 recipient of the YIVO Kremen Memorial Fellowship in East European Arts, Music and Theater. His work engages with issues arising from peering into the archive and imagining the power of “lost” forms of expression to articulate keenly felt needs in the present.
Note: Seating capacity will be limited and given on a first-come, first-served basis.
