The ISM encourages students to utilize Miller Hall as a center for the Institute’s community life by supporting student-organized events in resonance with the ISM’s mission. Such events must meet the following guidelines:
- Event must adhere to a clearly defined beginning and ending time.
- Spaces available for student events are: Tangeman Common Room, MH Seminar Rm. (203); and Student Workroom (005). The Kitchen (010) may be utilized only with special permission. Each space must be reserved in advance and is subject to availability.
- The room(s) must be completely clean and furniture returned to original places following the event.
- Alcohol consumption is not allowed at student events unless an exception has been sought from and expressly granted by the Director. Consumption is subject to the ISM’s policies on alcoholic beverages, attached.
- All events must have a designated responsible person in attendance. The responsible person is expected to do the following:
- Be able to give first aid or organize a first aid response
- Ensure attendance is limited to agreed numbers
- Ensure the event ends on time and that the building is left secure
- Ensure any incidents are reported and dealt with correctly
- Remain sober and ensure the event runs safely
Policy on Alcoholic Beverages
Connecticut state laws and University policies concerning the serving and consumption of alcohol are to be upheld at all times.
ISM funds may never be used to purchase alcoholic beverages for student-organized events. The ISM Director reserves the right to place additional requirements and restrictions (e.g., specifying start and end times) on any student-organized event subject to his or her approval.
Responsible consumption of alcohol will be permitted, subject to these provisions, only at social events which are beneficial to the community life of the ISM. All such events must be carried out in a manner that is both respectful of and accommodating to those among us who, for reasons stemming from personal belief or religious observance, do not consume alcohol.
This policy applies to all events held in ISM spaces (i.e., Miller Hall and ISM’s designated spaces in the Sterling Divinity Quadrangle) as well as off-campus events paid for with ISM funds.
If alcohol is to be served at a student-organized event on campus, approval by the Director is required.
Only beer and wine may be served. Spirits may be consumed only when offered by a trained and certified server, e.g., in a restaurant setting or at an event staffed by a professional caterer.
Alcoholic beverages may only be served in the room or rooms reserved and approved for the event. Open containers of alcoholic beverages may not be removed to or consumed in other areas.
Those leading and organizing events where alcoholic beverages are served should pay particular attention to ISM rules regarding use of its kitchen and other facilities, and will be responsible for ensuring those rules are followed.
No clearly intoxicated person will be served alcoholic beverages. All participants in events where alcohol is served are encouraged to make use of the Yale shuttle service, as well as local cab and rideshare services to ensure safe travel.
