Processions were of paramount importance for symbolic communication in medieval towns; in the dynamic performance of the religious rituals, not only theological meaning was expressed, but also social structures expressed, implemented, and occasionally questioned. The realms of sacred and profane were crossed, mingled and transcended, and a multiplicity of musical and artistic elements contributed to a transformative experience. The volume brings scholars from both sides of the Atlantic and liturgical, theological, historical, artistic and musical perspectives into an interdisciplinary dialogue between liturgy, music, and arts.
