Job Description: 

10 hours/week; we have a separate pianist/organist, so no requirement to play; 2 services/month; 3 months off in Summer; All Souls Unitarian Universalist Congregation is a progressive faith community whose mission is to create a “welcoming, caring, justice-seeking congregation within and beyond our walls.”

The congregation numbers 250 adults and 90 children and youth. Job Description: Choir Director - 10 hrs/wk Essential Responsibilities - with the support of the worship leadership:

Inspire Joyful Music Ministry Through the Choir and Congregational Singing

  1. Lead weekly choir rehearsals (Currently Wednesday 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. There is a piano accompanist on staff who plays at rehearsal and at services) from September to June
  2. Conduct choir 2 Sundays / month
  3. Lead congregational singing during services when the choir is singing
  4. Nurture and support volunteers (recognition, consistent contact, & feedback)
  5. As available, participate in annual music programming that involves the choir: Music Night, Music Sunday, (some years) Christmas Caroling to local non-profit service organizations

Administer the Program

  1. Plan music based on monthly ministry themes
  2. Program, distribute and rehearse choir music in a timely manner.
  3. Monitor budget and oversee expenditures

Publicize & Communicate

  1. Participate with staff colleagues in weekly worship planning meeting.
  2. Weekly check-in with Senior Minister (sometimes by phone, sometimes by Zoom)
  3. Participation in quarterly Worship Advisory Team meeting
  4. Communicate consistently with lay leadership
  5. Promote and generate enthusiasm for the choir and music ministry through a quarterly newsletter column

Personal Skills and Qualifications - must be able to:

  1. Listen well and communicate effectively by both oral and written means.
  2. Motivate, support, and inspire volunteers.
  3. Delegate and be an effective team worker.
  4. Work effectively and compassionately with singers of varying levels of skill.
  5. Uphold UU principles in all aspects of the program.
