Martin Jean reappointed as director of the Yale Institute of Sacred Music

The ISM is delighted to announce the reappointment of Professor Martin Jean as director of the Yale Institute of Music for another five-year term. Read the full announcement below from Yale provost, Scott Strobel.
Dear Members of the Institute of Sacred Music Community,
I am pleased to share that Professor Martin Jean has been reappointed director of the Yale Institute of Sacred Music (ISM) through a term ending on June 30, 2030. In his role as director, Martin has led ISM in educating students for leadership in performance, ministry, and scholarship, generating interdisciplinary connections in the sacred arts. His tenure has significantly strengthened Yale’s collaborative spirit, building meaningful connections across disciplines and faith traditions.
Martin is a model of steady leadership. During his most recent term, he steered ISM through the significant challenge of COVID-19 and reinvigorated the community after the pandemic. He has recruited new faculty in choral conducting, religion and literature, liturgical studies, and organ, and initiated planning to expand ISM’s pedagogy, research, and creative practice. Recently, he formed collaborations at Yale and beyond to explore the intersections of sacred music, religion, ecology and the arts, and sacred space, continuing to connect ISM to other fields and disciplines.
In addition to advancing ISM’s mission here on campus, Martin has further established ISM’s leadership in our home city, across the country, and around the world. Through a variety of programs and initiatives, ISM invites students, scholars, practitioners, and communities of faith to explore musical cultures and traditions, train for careers in church music, and expand parish-based music education for children, among other opportunities. This work represents the best of Yale, sharing knowledge and innovative practice for the benefit of society.
Please join me in expressing gratitude to Martin for his continued dedication to this role.
Sincerely,
Scott Strobel
